Friday Poem - Domination of Black by Wallace Stevens
This week's Friday Poem is 'Domination of Black', one of Wallace Stevens's earliest published poems, which can be found in his Collected Poems, published by Faber and Faber. An unsettling imagist dreamscape, it thrilled me when I first read it, having picked up the book on a whim in a bookshop, and it still does.
This was the first poem in the Collected that caught my eye; it made me want to read it aloud, and venture on into the depths of the book. The fact that his style of writing is very different from my own mattered not a bit. It has been a singular joy, over the last eight years since I discovered his work, to wander through it trying to fathom my way amidst sometimes uncertain philosophical territory, following the music all the way.
